A Softer Black Mist for Portraits, Not Night Lights

If a friend asked which black mist makes portraits look softer without turning into a neon light show, I'd point them at our XT888 Top—if their lens thread is somewhere between 49mm and 82mm.

If they shoot a Leica Q3 or a Fujifilm X100, I usually tell them to stay on the XT888 Bottom 1/4 instead. Those bodies sit on a smaller thread, and fighting adapters for a portrait filter is a bad trade.

Most people buy diffusion after watching night clips where streetlamps explode into giant halos. Then they screw that glass onto a portrait prime in daylight and wonder why the face looks milky. Soft skin bloom and that midnight halo look are different jobs. One filter can't do both well.

What Top is for

On modern glass, forehead and cheek highlights often clip hard. Top is tuned to ease that edge—more highlight roll-off on skin, less of the foggy wash you get when a heavy night mist dumps scatter into the shadows.

I won't pretend I've finished a full side-by-side portrait set with it yet. Group 2 is still on the production list. Until those frames exist, I'm not going to write as if I already inspected 100% crops. What I'll be watching for, when we shoot it: whether the highlight on the forehead softens without the eyelashes melting into the catchlight, and whether dark clothing stays dark instead of drifting gray.

Until then, the product line itself is the cleaner guide. Top ships only in 49–82mm—the range that covers most portrait primes and zooms people actually screw filters onto. It isn't built as an all-day "blow up every light source" street filter.

Where Bottom still wins

Q3 / X100 shooters already live on a smaller thread (often 39mm-class). Bottom 1/4 is the size-friendly path there. If someone wants loud night haze more than portrait control, Bottom's heavier look is usually closer to what they saw in those viral clips anyway.

I'm not trying to sell Top into every diffusion search. If you want massive glowing halos around midnight traffic, look elsewhere in the line—or skip us.

My daily kit, for context

On street walks I still run a Lumix GH7 with an OM SYSTEM 12–40mm f/2.8 PRO II. That's my daily camera, not a portrait-mist review kit. When I talk about Top for faces, I'm talking product intent and thread coverage—not a finished GH7 portrait lab report sitting on this page.
