UV Filter vs Clear Filter: Which Lens Protector Should You Use?
Compare UV and clear lens protection filters, their image-quality trade-offs, and when an L39 UV filter makes sense for digital photography.

A filter that stays on your lens all day has one difficult job: it needs to protect the glass while making itself almost invisible.
That sounds simple until you photograph a streetlight at night and discover a new reflection in the frame. Or you return from the coast with salt spray on an expensive front element. One situation makes you question the filter; the other makes you grateful that it was there.
This is why the argument about UV filters never really ends.
Some photographers keep one on every lens. Others remove every unnecessary piece of glass. Both positions can make sense. The right answer depends on what you photograph, where you work, and the quality of the filter in front of your lens.
The real question is not whether every photographer needs a UV filter. It is whether you need physical protection, UV filtration, both—or neither.
The Short Answer
Choose a clear protection filter when you want a physical barrier in front of the lens without intentionally filtering a particular wavelength.
Choose a UV filter when you want the same everyday protection plus a defined ultraviolet cutoff.
Use no protection filter when you are working in a controlled environment, physical damage is unlikely, and you want to eliminate every additional optical surface.

Neither one should noticeably darken the image or deliberately change its color. If it does, it is failing at its basic job.
What Problem Does a Protection Filter Actually Solve?
The front element of a camera lens lives in a more hostile environment than we sometimes admit.
It encounters fingerprints, dust, windblown grit, sea spray, light rain, tree branches and the occasional badly placed camera strap. Most of these things will not destroy a lens immediately, but repeated cleaning and exposure create unnecessary wear.
A protection filter gives you a replaceable surface.
I would rather clean dried salt from a filter than repeatedly clean the front element of an expensive lens. I would also rather replace a scratched filter than send a lens away for repair.
Manufacturers recognize this use case. Canon, for example, recommends considering protective filters when photographing in extreme weather and difficult conditions.
But a protection filter is not a suit of armor.
It cannot guarantee that a lens will survive a serious fall. It may help with light scratches, dust and direct contact, but a strong impact can still damage the filter, thread or lens. A lens hood often provides more useful impact protection because it creates physical distance around the front element.
The sensible approach is to use a hood and filter for different jobs:
- The hood helps block stray light and provides some impact protection.
- The filter provides a replaceable surface against dust, spray and scratches.
- The lens cap protects the lens while it is not being used.
What Is a Clear Protection Filter?
A clear protection filter is intended to provide physical protection without deliberately cutting a specific part of the light spectrum.
Its job is straightforward: let visible light pass through while placing a clean, replaceable piece of glass in front of the lens.
That makes a clear filter a logical choice when you want protection but do not need UV filtration.
However, “clear” does not automatically mean “optically invisible.”
Every filter introduces two additional glass surfaces. Poor glass, weak polishing or inadequate anti-reflective coating can create flare, ghosting, lower contrast or a slight color shift—especially when a bright light source appears inside or near the frame.
This is why a cheap piece of uncoated glass and a properly manufactured optical filter should not be treated as the same product simply because both look transparent.
What Is a UV Filter?
A UV filter is also a transparent protection filter, but it is designed to reduce ultraviolet light below a defined wavelength.
UV filters originally mattered more with photographic film because some film emulsions were sensitive to ultraviolet light. Excess UV could contribute to haze or a bluish appearance, particularly at high altitude.
Modern digital cameras already control much of this light through the lens, sensor cover glass and internal filter stack. As a result, you should not expect a UV filter to transform every digital photograph or magically remove atmospheric haze.
For most digital photographers, the practical value of a quality UV filter is now a combination of:
- Physical lens protection
- Easier cleaning
- A controlled UV cutoff
- The ability to replace the exposed glass instead of the lens element
This is an important distinction. A UV filter can still be useful on a digital camera, but it should not be sold as a miracle image-enhancement tool.
What Does L39 Mean?
The “L39” designation refers to a UV-cut filter designed around a cutoff wavelength of approximately 390 nanometers.
In simple language, the filter is intended to reduce ultraviolet wavelengths below this point while continuing to transmit visible light.
The XT995PRO is specified as an L39 UV-cut filter with a 390nm cutoff. The goal is not to make the photograph look filtered. The goal is to control ultraviolet light while keeping visible-light transmission high.
An L39 filter may make sense when you:
- Photograph outdoors regularly
- Work at higher elevations
- Shoot near the coast
- Want lens protection with a defined UV cutoff
- Use photographic film as well as digital cameras
- Prefer one filter that handles protection and UV control
For ordinary digital photography, the visible difference may be subtle. That is normal. A good protection filter should not constantly announce itself.
How to Choose Between UV and Clear
1. Start With Your Shooting Environment
If you mainly work in a clean studio, you may not need a protection filter all the time.
If you photograph travel, landscapes, events, workshops, beaches or busy streets, a replaceable protective surface becomes easier to justify.
I would strongly consider protection when shooting around sand, salt water, dust, light rain, children, crowds or industrial environments.
2. Decide Whether You Want UV Control
If your only objective is physical protection, choose a clear filter.
If you want physical protection plus a defined UV cutoff, choose a UV filter.
Do not choose based on the word “UV” alone. Look for the actual cutoff specification. A product described only as “UV protection” without a wavelength or optical data tells you very little.
3. Check Transmission and Reflectance
Transmission describes how much intended light passes through the filter.
Reflectance indicates how much light is reflected from its surfaces rather than transmitted. Lower reflectance generally helps reduce unwanted flare and ghosting.
These numbers are more useful than a large coating-layer number on its own. Coating quantity sounds impressive, but the final optical performance matters more.
For a protection filter, I look for high visible-light transmission, low average reflectance, neutral color, consistent optical glass, coatings on both sides and a frame that does not create unnecessary vignetting.
4. Match the Correct Diameter
Filter size is determined by the lens thread diameter, not the focal length.
Look for the diameter symbol on the lens, such as Ø39, Ø49, Ø67 or Ø77.
A 50mm lens is not automatically a 50mm filter. The “50mm” describes focal length; the filter thread may be 49mm, 52mm, 58mm or another size.
5. Test the Filter in Difficult Light
Do not judge a protection filter only by photographing a wall in soft daylight.
Test it with a streetlight near the edge of the frame, direct sunlight, a dark scene with bright point lights, high-contrast subjects and a detailed subject viewed at 100% magnification.
Compare the same composition with and without the filter. Look for ghost images, reduced contrast, unusual color and loss of fine detail. That is where weak filters reveal themselves.

The B270 glass substrate was selected for high, consistent visible-light transmission. B270 optical glass is known for its clear appearance and stable transmission across a broad wavelength range, as described in SCHOTT’s B270 technical information.
The multi-coating system is intended to control surface reflections while maintaining high transmission. The slim black frame helps reduce unnecessary bulk around the front of the lens.
The range covers common diameters from 37mm through 82mm. A dedicated 39mm version is available for compatible Leica, Voigtländer and other compact lens systems where fit and hood clearance matter.
The result is not supposed to look dramatic.
It is supposed to protect the lens, control UV below the specified cutoff and stay out of the photograph.
Who Should Choose the XT995PRO?

I do not believe every photographer needs to keep a filter on every lens. I believe photographers should understand the trade-off and make a deliberate choice.
UV Filter vs Clear Filter: My Recommendation
Choose a clear protection filter when physical protection is your only goal.
Choose a UV filter when you want that protection combined with a defined ultraviolet cutoff.
Use no filter when the environment is controlled, the risk to the lens is low and maximum resistance to flare is more important than front-element protection.
Whichever option you choose, avoid treating transparent glass as a simple commodity. The glass substrate, coating, reflectance, frame and manufacturing consistency all affect whether the filter disappears—or becomes part of the picture for the wrong reason.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a UV filter reduce image quality?
Any additional optical surface can potentially affect image quality. A well-made UV filter with quality glass and effective anti-reflective coatings should minimize the effect, but difficult backlighting can still expose differences. Test the filter with bright point lights and direct sunlight.
Is a clear filter better than a UV filter?
Neither is universally better. A clear filter is appropriate when you only want physical protection. A UV filter adds a defined ultraviolet cutoff. The correct choice depends on your camera, environment and intended use.
Do digital cameras still need UV filters?
Modern digital cameras are less sensitive to UV than many film cameras, so a UV filter usually does not produce a dramatic visible change. Many photographers use UV filters primarily for lens protection and easier cleaning.
What does L39 mean on a UV filter?
